Tectonic Theater Project
In 1991, Moises Kaufman and Jeffery LaHoste founded the Tectonic Theater Project, which is a non-profit theatre company dedicated to exploring the ideas of how art is created and constructed. The company performs all over the world with workshops, readings, and full productions. Their main goal is to explore the universality of social, political, and human issues. Its most known plays are Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, The Laramie Project, and I am My Own Wife. These plays test the boundaries of how plays are created, by using interviews, transcripts, and biographies to write the plays. Before these plays, written by Kaufman, the company used playwrights that did not fit into the typical theatrical structure such as Sameul Beckett, Sophie Treadwell, and Naomi Iizuke.
Current Productions
The Laramie Cycle consists of two plays, The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. Kaufman and other company members traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to interview people about the murdering of a 21 year old homosexual student. These interviews were the bases of the play. Ten years after the interviews, Kaufman wondered what had changed in that same town, so they went back to interview the community. The idea behind this second project was to see how the event has effected the town after ten years.
One Arm is a stage adaption by Kaufman on Tennessee William's screenplay One Arm. This play tells the story of Ollie, a professional boxer, who has lost his arm and now has to find other ways of surviving.
Gato Con Botas is an opera that has been collaborated with Gothman Chamber Opera to tell a new version of Puss in Boots. This production is a light-hearted opera, in which all ages can enjoy.
